Taiyaki is a Japanese confection of cooked pancake batter filled with red bean paste. The mold for the treat is shaped in the form of a fish. The fish, resembling a sea bream which in Japanese is named tai, is associated with good luck. Although a red bean paste called azuki is the traditional filling for taiyaki, other non-traditional fillings such as cheese, chocolate or custard have become popular.
